What is an IUI?

Understanding the various fertility treatments can be confusing. A common performed procedure in fertility treatment is An IntraUterine Insemination (IUI). It is a procedure where a semen sample is processed to allow for a small volume of the more motile sperm to be placed within the uterine cavity, timed appropriately with ovulation. The idea behind the IUI is simple; to take the motile sperm and bring them closer to the egg. This is because in reality, during intercourse the majority of the ejaculated sperm never reaches the fallopian tube, where fertilization occurs.

The IUI is frequently done in combination with an ovulation induction cycle (this means medications such as clomid, femara or injectable medications, are given to help patients grow follicles). Often this is coupled with a “trigger” shot that induces ovulation, allowing the IUI to be timed and done prior to the egg being released.

The actual IUI procedure is fairly quick and has a similar discomfort level to a pap smear (although every patient is different). You may be asked to rest or lie down for a few minutes afterwards, but otherwise you are able to resume normal daily activities afterwards.

There are several reasons someone might consider an IUI.

It could be due to low sperm counts, difficulties with intercourse (male and female reasons), use of donor sperm, or previously frozen sperm samples. Additionally, if your partner is traveling and not available at time of ovulation, an IUI can help circumvent that issue. This common procedure is widely performed in Fertility clinics across the country, and has proven to be successful in helping many people build their families!

To delve deeper into the IUI process and determine if it could be beneficial for your situation, we recommend scheduling a consultation. This will allow you to gather more information and find out if IUI is a suitable option for you!
